National Park Officials Announce Closure of Popular Hiking Trail

Hiking trail in the sunsetDo you love hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? With hundreds of hiking trails stretching through the Smokies, there’s a trail that meets the needs and experience level of every hiker. Unfortunately, national park officials have had to close one of the most popular hiking trails in the Smokies due to a damaged footbridge.

During a windstorm, the Ramsey Cascades trail was damaged. Extreme winds caused a large tree to fall which destroyed the handrail that is used for crossing the river. The bridge to cross the river was also damaged, causing a major safety issue in the park. For the safety of all hikers, it is recommended that you do not hike this trail until it is repaired, hopefully by late April 2014.

About Ramsey Cascades Trail

Ramsey Cascades is popular because it’s one of the best Smoky Mountain hiking experiences, boasting one of the major waterfalls in the national park. The spring season is a great time to visit the trail because it’s filled with wildflowers. Luckily, when you visit after the trail is reopened, you will still have plenty of time to see the flowers.

Other Closures in the Smokies
