A Little Bit of the History of Gatlinburg

The first official settlers to the area were Martha Jane Huskey Ogle and her seven children, in 1806. Martha’s late husband, William Ogle, is known Great Smoky Mountains National Park Scenic Sunrise Landscapefor building the first permanent residence in the area, but he passed away before he could truly call the area home.

How Gatlinburg Got Its Name

Before changing its name to Gatlinburg, the area was known as White Oak Flats in honor of the abundance of white oak trees that surrounded the town. The town’s official name didn’t change to Gatlinburg until early settler Radford C. Gatlin opened a post office in his general store, in 1856.

What Gatlinburg is Like Today

Today, Gatlinburg TN has grown to become one of the most popular travel destinations in the United States, with over 12 million visitors to the area every year. That being said, visitors can still see glimpses into the town’s history during their vacation.

William Ogle’s original cabin is still standing and is located on the Parkway next to the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Many of the area’s other original homesites can still be found just a short drive away inside the national park including the Sugarlands, Elkmont and Cades Cove areas.
