4 Things You Don’t Want to Forget on a Day Hike in the Smoky Mountains

Are you planning on hiking in the Smokies while you’re on vacation? At Amazing Views Cabin Rentals, we want to make sure everyone has a safe day hike in the Smoky Mountains, so we have put together a list of the top 4 things you don’t want to forget when you’re enjoying the springtime weather in the Smokies.

1. Water

Water is one of the most important items for hiking in the Smoky Mountains. You want to make sure you have a minimum of 2 quarts per person each day. We don’t recommend you drink from rivers, streams or any source of water in the national park. Many of these waters are contaminated. It is safest to pack your own water rather than use the purification tablets, too.

2. Comfortable Shoes

When you’re hiking, you want to be as comfortable as possible. It’s best to wear closed-toe shoes, or even a pair of hiking boots. If you’re taking a short or paved hike, you can comfortably wear tennis shoes. If you plan to take a long, rugged hike, we suggest hiking boots or some sort of footwear with support.

3. Layered Clothing

Even though you’re taking a day hike in the Smoky Mountains, you want to make sure you dress in layers. The weather is colder as you reach higher elevations in the mountains. You’ll at least want a jacket, even if it’s warmer at the lower elevations.

4. Backpack

Carrying a backpack is essential for every hiker. A backpack is a great place to store your jacket and water as well as a map, insect repellant, a first aid kit, sunscreen and energy-filled snack items. If you forget any of these items, there are convenience stores on your way into the mountains, and some items like maps and compasses are available at visitor centers in the national park.

A retreat to the Smoky Mountains is the perfect way to rest and relax. After a long hike through the mountains, you’ll love spending time in one of Amazing Views’ beautiful log cabins.
